Perhaps you have heard of a friend or coworker that has installed fake security cameras in their home or place of business. Will they actually stop a crime from occurring or are they just a waste of time and money?

The truth, is that they once were effective but now they are becoming increasingly obsolete for a couple of sound reasons. Also, you have to bear in  mind that if a crime does occur and there are fake security cameras monitoring the area, don’t bother checking the DVD because there isn’t one.

To start with, it was the cost of CCTV camera systems that made fake security cameras so popular in years past. All that has changed however; because you can now buy a real security camera for well under $50. Also, the backup components, such as DVD recorders are now far more affordable as well.

Another reason that their popularity has waned, is that criminals are far more aware of them now. Sure, they worked for a few years but after time people began to get used to them, so they just aren’t as much of a deterrent as they used to be.

They still do have uses though, so of course you can still find them on the market. For instance, in places such as at the bottom of a long driveway you can install one and avoid the cost of having to run the cable all the way up to the home or business.

Also, they are still in use in retail establishments to deter shoplifters. After all, if you can’t pay an employee to monitor a real CCTV then whats the use of having one. Also, shoplifters tend to be in the low rankings as far as criminal sophistication is concerned and are far less likely to give a camera a whole lot of deep thought.
